30 Arrested and Indicted in Major #HeroinBust #Pittsburgh

In a major bust, authorities have dismantled an alleged gang which is said to have sold millions of dollars worth of heroin in Pennsylvania.

Various members of the alleged gang, which authorities say called itself “Bricks-R-Us” (B.R.U.), were arrested this week in Monroeville. According to U.S. Attorney David Hickton, the group sold vast quantities of the drug from Newark, N.J. to Pittsburgh, and also in Armstrong and Cambria counties.

Agents arrested 30 people in an early morning and afternoon sweep on Thursday, and are continuing to seek 14 additional individuals. The raids involved over 200 police and law enforcement agents representing dozens of local, state, and federal agencies. Several of the defendants are said to be minors under the age of 18.

The recent explosion of deaths of people who have used heroin laced with fentanyl, a powerful and extremely dangerous narcotic, has resulted in increasing crackdowns by Pennsylvania authorities.

Pittsburgh Area Mom and Her Three Teens Arrested on Drug Charges

A Pittsburgh area mother and her three teenage children were arrested on drug related charges.

The 50 year-old mother, along with her 17 year old son and two teenage daughters, were at all their home near the intersection of Huxley and Sutherland Streets when Zone Six narcotics detectives arrived on the scene with a search warrant. Police say that the mother was involved in the drug trade, and had involved her three teenage children. Inside the home police allegedly found cocaine, heroin, and marijuana, as well as $2000 in cash. Police also say they recovered an unknown quantity of firearms at the residence.

The bust comes as a result of increased anti-crime efforts by police in Zone Six. The area has reportedly seen an increase in crime over the past several weeks, including multiple shootings in the West End.

At the time of this posting, the Mother and her children were awaiting a Preliminary Hearing to Contest the charges lodged against them.

Pittsburgh Drug Ring Sold Meth as Ecstasy

Pittsburgh authorities allege that drug dealers are going to new and even more dangerous lengths in order to peddle their wares to unsuspecting users. A drug ring in the Pittsburgh area was allegedly selling extremely dangerous methamphetamines to local drug users by claiming it was the club/rave drug known as Ecstasy. Federal officials said last Friday that suburban locations such as the Mall at Robinson, selected for their inconspicuous nature, were used by members of the ring as meet-up locations for their buyers.

A 29-year-old North Fayette man was alleged to be the leader of the drug ring, and is accused of trying to generate an entirely new market in the drug trade by selling meth and claiming it was Ecstasy. According to Michael Christmas, FBI supervisory special agent, the drug ring was being investigated as the result of a 14-person indictment.

Ecstasy is commonly sold to college-age individuals for club and rave parties, and has an entirely different effect on the body and mind than methamphetamines do. The people who took the drug under the auspices that it was Ecstasy told police that they wondered why they remained wide awake for days, a characteristic that is one of the effects of meth. The drug that was being sold was tested as being 90% meth with the remaining 10% being Ecstasy. According to investigators, the indictment began in early 2013, and led to revelations that a group of people headquartered near the Pittsburgh airport was having meth shipped in from Cleveland, as well as heroin and marijuana shipped in from New York City.

The ring leader is likely to be charged with conspiracy to possess and distribute methamphetamines and heroin, as well as possession of a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking.
