55th Annual #Pittsburgh #ArtsFestival Opens Tomorrow. View and Download Event Schedule

A sure sign that Summer is on its way to Pittsburgh is the opening day of the Three Rivers Arts Festival at Point State Park and throughout downtown Pittsburgh.

Artists from around the world will flock to Pittsburgh to show their masterpiece work or sell a few items to the Festival Faithful.  The Festival will also include many food vendors, music, theater, poetry and much more.

The festival is said to draw more than 400,000 visitors to the Pittsburgh area to view the sites, purchase artwork or just to enjoy the scenery of beautiful downtown Pittsburgh from the vantage point of the Point.

Whether you are visiting the Arts Festival after work or making the Festival a family weekend outing, please have fun and enjoy yourself throughout the event.

Security and Police Officers will have an increased presence at the festival and all around downtown to assist with crowd control, traffic and to ensure a stress free and safe festival. Officers will also be on the lookout for minors using fake ids, underage drinking and DUI offenders.

Additionally, officers will immediately identify offenders with open containers or those whom are visibly intoxicated in public.

Lawrenceville Marijuana Grow-house Burglary Bust Leads to Three Arrests. #Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh police allegedly discovered a large marijuana grow in the city this week, in a bust which resulted in three arrests.

Pittsburgh police allege that a marijuana grow operation, containing over 300 plants, was discovered in Lawrenceville. Police say that the grow was located in a commercial building, at the intersection of Davison Street and Urbana Way, on the second floor. Apparently police were led to the grow as a result of an early morning 911 call on Thursday, which reported a burglary in process at the location.

Upon arrival police allegedly encountered two suspects, ages 30 and 31, burglarizing bags of marijuana from the building, and a third suspect, age 34, waiting in the area as the getaway driver.

The men face various charges, including possession with intent to distribute, burglary, and possessing instruments of crime.

Police say that an investigation is ongoing to determine who was growing the marijuana.

#Pittsburgh Area Teen Arrested After Allegedly Bringing Loaded Gun onto School Bus

An area teenager was charged this week with having brought a loaded handgun onto a school bus.

The 17 year-old suspect was charged with having brought a loaded handgun onto an area school bus on Wednesday. The Bethel Park High School student allegedly showed the .380-caliber semi-automatic pistol to at least one other student, who then notified school officials.

According to the report the student told police that he found the gun, and it was later determined that the gun had been stolen from a home in Peters Township. Police allegedly found the gun at the student’s home after his parents agreed to allow them to conduct a search.

According to Bethel Park police Chief John Mackey, the teen is being charged as a juvenile with gun related charges, and is being held at the Shuman Juvenile Detention Center.

#Pittsburgh Police Make Four Arrests in Alleged Beaver Co. #MethLab Case

Police in Beaver County took part in the raid of an alleged meth lab in the county this week, leading to four arrests.

Franklin Township police, working with Pennsylvania State Police, arrested four suspects Wednesday who are alleged to have been running a meth lab out of an area home. According to a local resident, the raid involved SWAT vehicles and approximately 30 to 35 officers. The raid, which was conducted at 123 South Hazen Avenue, allegedly netted three men and one woman, all in their 20s and 30s.

The neighbor says that he found the house suspicious due to high levels of activity at all times of the day and night.

Police have not released the names of the accused or the charges they face. Most likely, some, if not all, will face felony charges of possession with intent to distribute narcotics.

Superintendent of Local School District Gets Probation after DUI

The superintendent of local school district has agreed to enter into a rehabilitation program after being charged with drunken driving in February.

The superintendent for the Trinity Area School District was admitted into an Accelerated Rehabilitative Disposition program , which is meant to help first time DUI offenders get back on the right track. The superintendent was pulled over by Ohio Township police on February 2, as a result of having crossed the centerline on Mount Nebo Road. After a sobriety test, the man was charged with driving under the influence, and released to his friend, who drove him home. According to police the man’s toxicology test showed that he had been driving with a blood alcohol content which was twice the legal limit.

After completing the ARD program the man must serve one year’s probation, and then will be eligible to have his record expunged. As a result of his arrest he was suspended from his job position with pay.

Carnegie Man to Serve 7 to 14 Years for Third Degree Murder of Step-Father

A Pittsburgh area man pled guilty to killing his stepfather last year, in an incident which saw the man shoot his stepfather following a fight.

The 20 year-old Carnegie man will spend 7 to 14 years behind bars as a result of a plea agreement in which he pled guilty to third-degree murder. The incident in question reportedly began when the suspect’s mother was involved in a domestic dispute on July 27, and asked her son to come over to change the locks. The suspect complied, but when his stepfather arrived at the home and found he had been locked out, he allegedly entered through an unsecured window.

Upon entering the home the stepfather realized that a television, which had been placed in a location on the first floor, was gone – not knowing that it had been taken upstairs. He called the suspect, who then went to the home to check what his mother. The two engaged in a heated argument which became physical, but the fight was broken up. Suddenly the suspect pulled a gun from his waistband and fired, hitting the victim in the chest and killing him.

At the time of this writing, no Appeal had been filed.

Westmoreland Man Accused of Killing His Girlfriend

A Westmoreland man has been arrested and accused of being responsible for his girlfriend’s death.

The body of the 52 year-old victim was found in a Laurel Mountain home on a Friday at about 10:00 PM. Family members had asked police to check or her because they had not heard from her for several days. Upon entering the home, the responding officer noticed blood in the kitchen and found the victim’s body near a rear door. Apparently officers also found several packages of Band-Aids in the bathroom.

Police say that a friend of the suspect informed them that he had a large cut on his hand the day after the alleged murder, and that the suspect claimed that he suffered the gash in an incident involving a cat. When police located the suspect he apparently had injuries to both hands. According to an autopsy report the victim died from blunt force trauma to the head.

The accused was detained at the Westmoreland County Jail pending a Preliminary Hearing for charges of Homicide.

McKeesport Teen Held on Suspicion of Murder

Police arrested a man on suspicion that he shot and killed another man in McKeesport area of Pittsburgh.

On Monday, Allegheny County police arrested a 19 year-old McKeesport man on suspicion of murdering a 20 year old man at about 1:30 AM Saturday morning in McKeesport. Police allege that the suspect and another man exited the Beer Barrel bar shortly before the shooting, and that witnesses say that he was extremely agitated at the time. Police allege that the suspect followed the victim to a nearby PNC Bank, where he then shot and killed the victim.

The alleged killer is being held in the Allegheny County Jail on one count of homicide.  At the time of this writing, the alleged Killer was awaiting a preliminary hearing to contest the charges.

Pittsburgh Area Mom and Her Three Teens Arrested on Drug Charges

A Pittsburgh area mother and her three teenage children were arrested on drug related charges.

The 50 year-old mother, along with her 17 year old son and two teenage daughters, were at all their home near the intersection of Huxley and Sutherland Streets when Zone Six narcotics detectives arrived on the scene with a search warrant. Police say that the mother was involved in the drug trade, and had involved her three teenage children. Inside the home police allegedly found cocaine, heroin, and marijuana, as well as $2000 in cash. Police also say they recovered an unknown quantity of firearms at the residence.

The bust comes as a result of increased anti-crime efforts by police in Zone Six. The area has reportedly seen an increase in crime over the past several weeks, including multiple shootings in the West End.

At the time of this posting, the Mother and her children were awaiting a Preliminary Hearing to Contest the charges lodged against them.

Two Women Charged with Hoagie-Fundraiser Scam in Carrick

Two Pittsburgh area women were recently arrested on charges that they fraudulently offered local residents the opportunity to purchase hoagie sandwiches, which were to be delivered at a later time. It turns out that the offer was a complete scam.

Police allege that a 27 year-old Pittsburgh woman went door to door in Carrick, pre-selling hoagie sandwiches to residents for $6.00 a piece. It turns out that the woman, who told the residents that she was selling the sandwiches as part of a fundraiser, was allegedly perpetrating a scam. Police also allege that a 31 year-old area woman was also involved in the scheme. In all, approximately just 100 sales were made.

Police are attempting to make a list of all for women’s victims. Possible charges could include theft by deception, receiving stolen property and criminal conspiracy.
